Unless otherwise indicated, all of these tools allow you to check the space of any disk (local or network) or any folder.

DataVolume
DataVolume
Version: 1.01 Date: Mar 23, 2004
Description: This is my favorite disk space utility! Very fast, very easy to use. Only shows the top 20 folders and the top 20 files, but this can be easier to use than showing every folder/file.
DiskFree
DiskFree
Version: 2.2 Date: Jan 16, 2000
Description: This taskbar icon (with popup window) lets you know instantly how much free space is left on your hard drive(s). Doesn't let you pick individual folders, just drives.
JDiskReport
JDiskReport
Version: 1.1.2 Date: Nov 14, 2003
Description: This is a Java application, and suffers from an extremely slow launch-time. Other than that, though, this is a top-notch tool, with fast scans and excellent pie-charts of disk usage.
SC-DiskInfo
SC-DiskInfo
Version: 1.0.0.1 Date: 2002
Description: This is a pretty good disk-space, but it suffers from minor sorting bugs. Doesn't look like it's been updated in a while, though.
Scanner
Scanner
Version: 2.6 Date: Apr 13, 2002
Description: Scanner doesn't let you pick individual folders (just whole drives) and has a strange user-interface. The only reason I'm even listing it here is that it shows disk usage in an interesting concentric-ring/pie-chart.
TreeSize
TreeSize
Version: 1.71 Date: Feb 11, 2004
Description: TreeSize shows you the sizes of all files and folders inside a local drive or folder. The latest version (1.71) of this free software doesn't work on networked drives, but the $35 TreeSize Pro will. Before shelling out the bucks, look for TreeSize version 1.6.1.73 (Mar 20, 2002) - it doesn't have any problem working on network folders/drives! Doesn't seem to be missing anything major compared with the more recent (but more limited!) 1.71 release. Probably the best feature of TreeSize, though, is the ability to right-click on a folder (in an Explorer window) and run TreeSize on it!

The information above represents my experience with a certain version of each piece of software. I have no vested interest in any of these programs, and only provide this info as a guide (your experience and preferences may vary greatly!).

The version number listed is the latest version I have tried. To download the latest version, click on the name or the icon of the program, which should take you to the program's homepage, or to a software archive site.
